Wudong Dan Cong Tong Pian Xiang is our latest addition to our Wudong Shan Dan Cong Teas. You will instantly taste why teas from Wudong Shan are so famous. The combination of terroir and cultivar really do render an unparalleled dan cong. While it’s fun to smell a booming aroma from the dry leaf it’s a better sign when the dry leaf is more timid, as this tea was, saving its aroma and flavour for the liquor. There were mild hints of cocoa but nothing was jumping out of the gaiwan. The liquor rendered a bright and clear light golden colour and the first sips instantly revealed a depth and delicacy of mouthfeel. A unified lightness and thickness like a sturdy feather bed, the paradox of good teas, opposites in perfect alignment to create a delightful sip. As for bitterness, Tong Pian Xiang exhibited none, even with a significant oversteep (our famous smackdown infusion), the liquor was strong, to be sure, but not offensive in the least. The bottom cup combines typical caramelly aromas with the dan cong floral note. The Chinese have an expression that is hard to translate for a tea like this. ‘Shui3 lu4 xi4’ – it’s something that is classy and lovely because of the accumulation of all details being perfectly attended to. This tea is a great example of shui lu xi.
